If we don’t, we leave our employer and look for a more progressive organisation that can help shape the direction of our careers, by working with us to achieve our goals and reach our potential.
We all need to feel valued.
Two weeks ago I visited an organisation that, for a number of reasons, had ignored employee development. The CEO had told me that he had seen it as something he will get round to and at the time it was just additional bureaucracy.
Ultimately he paid the price when a number of bright, excellent workers walked and he lost eight of his top talent in a matter of a few weeks.
To his credit he had discussed the reasons why with the outgoing employees and recruited a specialist to discuss what they needed to put in place to improve the situation. In fact the CEO was deeply upset by these events but unfortunately it was too late to save some great talent.
So why was I there? The answer was simple, in that he had recruited an HR person and they wanted to automate Employee Development to make sure nothing was overlooked and therefore they were looking at Greentree ERP Software, and in particular the HR modules.
When the new HR manager first phoned me they were unsure if an ERP software solution was the right way to progress but when I explained that they could separate modules out but still get the benefits of Greentree’s workflow etc we decided to meet.
The CEO explained that he wanted to achieve a number of goals:
- Showing the employees that he and his management cared and did have a real interest in their future with his company
- To build better loyalty and therefore productivity
- To help his staff and future staff to advance in their chosen career path, with caring support (this included training, mentoring, coaching and regular employee reviews)
The organisation therefore want Greentree to provide the technology to help them ensure individual and company goals are consistent and aligned through employee development automation.
They wanted to ensure the management process for staff reviews and the maintaining of vital information on staff training, succession and remuneration to help them ensure the level of attention each of their 200 employees require.
Of course the technology only provides the framework to facilitate this process and ensure that no one ever slips through the net.
We are moving ahead with this project and it’s not costing them much and indeed is not a complex project.
What this project will provide is a constant reminder that ensures Managers take the time to spend quality time on a one-to-one basis with their staff and understanding their employees, their skill sets and future needs and then leading them in the direction they should be going.
I believe the payoff for this organisation in terms of long-term loyalty will be great, providing they handle the employee development well.
The technology brings a number of key benefits:
- Schedule reviews for an employee
- Set and measure goals
- Formalise assessment criteria
- Define training needs
- Automate staff appraisals and development
- Maintain full history for each employee
- Find out how Greentree can help automate
